What it Takes to Work in Alberta’s Legal Cannabis Industry

Working in ALBERTA’s Cannabis InDustry

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (or AGLC) has established strict regulations around the emerging private retail cannabis industry in Alberta. The province has outlined a number of requirements for individuals looking to gain employment in the its budding new industry. If you are looking to get involved in the marketing or distribution of cannabis in Alberta, there are two main types of jobs AGLC is responsible for regulating:

  • Cannabis Representatives:

    • Individuals who market cannabis in Alberta

  • Retail Staff:

    • Owners

    • Managers

    • Supervisors

    • Cashiers

    • Security Staff

Requirements for Cannabis Retail Staff in Alberta 

To get a job in Alberta’s cannabis industry, candidates must be an AGLC approved Qualified Cannabis Worker (QCW) by completing the following hiring requirements:

1. AGLC SellSafe Cannabis Staff Training Program

Similar to a ProServe certificate for serving and selling alcohol in Alberta, the AGLC SellSafe program is an online course designed to prepare part-time and full-time retail staff on how to responsibly sell legal non-medical cannabis.

Here are some of the topics covered in the AGLC SellSafe training program:

  • Public responsibility

  • Laws and liability

  • Protecting minors

  • Understanding cannabis

  • Intoxication and impairment

  • Responsible service strategies

  • Assessing the customer

 Note: The SellSafe certification is mandatory for cannabis hires in Alberta and must be completed prior to applying to the AGLC to be a Qualified Cannabis Worker.

 
 

 2. Completed Qualified Cannabis Worker Form

Upon receiving your SellSafe Certification, in which you are allotted 30 days to complete, the next step is to complete the Qualified Cannabis Worker application. This application will determine whether or not you are approved to become a cannabis worker in Alberta and is valid for five years once approved. The AGLC requirements for becoming a QCW are outlined in section 1.6 of the AGLC Retail Cannabis Store Handbook.

As a first-time applicant, documentation requirements include:

  • Identification

    • If you were born in Canada, provide a copy of your birth certificate, Canadian passport or Indian status card

    • If you were not born in Canada, provide a copy of Certificate of Canadian Citizenship or immigration documents such as a permanent resident card, landed immigrant document or current work/study permit

  • An original, unaltered criminal records check from the local police service or RCMP dated within the last three months

Note: The AGLC is quoting a 2-4 week processing time for QCW applications.
